History

Our history dates back to the birth of nuclear energy and the development of the world's first commercial nuclear power station, Calder Hall in Sellafield, in 1956. In fact we've always been pioneers, that's probably why we're still leading the way today. Of course, over the years our focus has changed. Primarily we're now committed to safely managing the nuclear waste that's already been generated, decommissioning (our work at Windscale started in 1988) and vitrification (in 1991 we began turning high level radioactive waste into glass).

In the last 12 months alone we've carried out a massive concrete pour (over 1,400 cubic metres in just 13 hours), won a host of awards (for everything from our safety record through to our payroll giving scheme) and shipped 160te of reprocessed uranium to Russia. Over the next 12 months:

  • We will continue to safely decommission some of the highest hazards in the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority portfolio - there are 150 decommissioning and major projects underway on the site today.
  • We will continue to be a time of great change. Sellafield Ltd is moving into the commercial world with the introduction of a new Parent Body Organisation.
  • We will continue to operate commercial plants to generate revenue for our customer and to offset cost of decommissioning (i.e. Thorp, Sellafield MOX Plant and Magnox Reprocessing).
  • So, ahead lie many more challenges, the chance to continue making history. We want you to be part of it.
